Not long ago we took a look<\/a> at the health of the textile and apparel sector, reporting data from the survey conducted by Confindustria Moda for Smi (Sistema moda Italia)<\/a> on the first half of 2021 that attempted to chart the sector’s prospects as the pandemic ends. Interviews with entrepreneurs suggested cautious optimism, a fair amount of confidence in the future, even signaling some awakening of the foreign market.<\/p>\n

It had not been assumed, and no one would have been able to, that after two years of the pandemic, including closures, production stoppages and declining sales, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict would come along to shuffle the cards again and throw further instability at the prospects for recovery.<\/p>\n

How are things today, a few months after the start of the conflict for the textile sector? Let’s try to figure it out with new data from the Smi survey on the sector’s economic development in the first and second quarters of 2022.<\/p>\n

Textile sector: exports rise, but…<\/h2>\n

The first comforting news is that the supply chain is holding up. In 2020, for the manufacturing part of the textile-fashion-accessories supply chain, there had been a decline in turnover of about 20 percent. In contrast, the 2021 pre-consensus is positive with nearly 53 billion euros in turnover (+18.4 percent over 2020). However, the gap of about 5.4 percentage points with 2019, the year before the pandemic, remains unbridged.<\/p>\n

In the first quarter of 2022, 83 percent of the companies sampled by the survey show positive sales dynamics compared to the previous year. The increase is also confirmed for the second quarter by registering a +16.3 percent although softening compared to recoveries in previous quarters.<\/p>\n

Compared to the January-February two-month period of 2021 that showed a heavy -15.9 percent in exports, the latest Istat data for the same two-month period of this year, processed by the Confindustria Moda Study Center for Smi, tell us that exports enjoy good health with a 16 percent growth and a value of 5.3 billion.<\/p>\n

…declines in the number of companies and employment.<\/h2>\n

Decidedly less bright is the overall picture on the number of enterprises and employment. In fact, there is expected to be a 2 percent decrease in the number of firms in the sector (with the closure of 890,000 local units) and a 2.1 percent drop in the number of employees (with 7860 fewer people employed).<\/p>\n

As Smi President Sergio Tamborini commented on the sidelines of the report presentation – \u201cabout 3 billion are missing to return to pre-covid values.\u201d Overall, however, the textile sector shows resilience compared to other industries. And despite the above insecurities due to the unstable international scenario, the results of the first months of 2022 confirm a recovery trend.
