Paper production has always been a challenge for the environment, but today, thanks to FSC certification, a big step has been taken toward more sustainable use of forests.
This international standard ensures that wood-based products, such as paper, come from responsibly managed forests, contributing to the preservation of natural resources and the well-being of local communities. But what exactly does the FSC label guarantee?
What is FSC certification
FSC certification, an acronym for Forest Stewardship Council, was born in 1993 in response to deforestation in an attempt to limit the damage caused by reckless exploitation of natural resources. The goal is to promote sustainable forest management, ensuring that they can also be used by future generations.
Responsible forest management is also complemented by attention to each stage of the production cycle along the entire value chain. In the paper industry, for example, from the harvesting of the wood to the processing of the final product, strict quality and sustainability standards are guaranteed.
With FSC certification, not just forests
FSC certification takes the form of a holistic view of sustainability, in which it is not only trees that must be preserved, but also the well-being of local people. In fact, this standard includes:
- environmental impact – through FSC-certified production, the preservation of biodiversity is promoted and the impact of industry on land, air and water is limited.
- community relations – in the FSC standard, the socioeconomic development of local communities takes a leading role, ensuring that native peoples have a say in the management of the forests in which they have always lived.
- workers’ rights – the standard ensures safe working conditions, combats exploitation and promotes compliance with international regulations.
- protection of indigenous peoples – by recognizing their value, FSC certification ensures that the history and traditions of local peoples are protected.
Adhering to FSC certification, therefore, means not only respecting the environment, but contributing to a more just, equitable and sustainable economy.
